Central in Oxford County, Birchlawn Stock Farms lays on gently rolling land with wide sections of open cropland. Larry Smith, started his herd in 1995 on 100 acres of limited pasture and mainly cash crop to hay or grains. Larry retired from Gencor at the end of 2000 and has enjoyed his extra time with his animals. When he moves among them, you can tell he has spent time with his herd. Larry had various positions within Gencor in his 37 year career, but his main interest was and still is genetics. His farm tag line is, "good looking appreciated, hard working required." Quoting Larry, "there are a handful of cows that will stay a long time." Larry Smith is a pleasant man with great passion for his cattle! June 20th was a sunnier day than I like to shoot in, but we worked through them trying to avoid the shadows. Larry's cattle are quiet, sometimes too quiet to get that, "I'm really glad to be a cow" looks, but in the end the pictures turned out really good. Larry sells some cows by private treaty, but the big sale for him is the annual consignment of cows and heifers to the GOLD BAR AND GUESTS sale coming up August 25th. A few bulls with show and breeding potential are marketed each spring and a few that do not meet Larry's high standards fit into the stocker and freezer beef market.
