Whether photographing people or livestock, as the photographer it’s your job to convey to your “attention-getter” what to do to get a proper head carriage on your subject.
Communicate with your assistant and try different techniques. For example, sometimes moving away from the subject is more effective than moving closer.
I often compare animals to people, each subject has its own personality, and it’s up to the photographer to portray that personality.
In this example, I had my attention-getters move a pen of heifers around in a pen about fifty feet of where the heifer was standing. Notice the difference between the two shots. I think the heifer looks a lot more attractive in the 2nd shot. She’s full of personality, wouldn’t you agree?
